Edwin van der Sar, a former goalkeeper for Manchester United and the Netherlands, has been discharged from intensive care following a brain haemorrhage.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper and CEO of Ajax was brought to the hospital during a vacation in Croatia before being flown to a hospital in the Netherlands.

What Van der Sar said on his Twitter handle: First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages.

“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit,”

“However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery.”

The 52-year-old played for Manchester United from 2006 to 2011, making 266 appearances. He won the Premier League four times and the Champions League in 2008.
