The 22-year-old Greenwood came through United’s youth, but he hasn’t featured for the Premier League team since January 2022. The previous season, he was on loan at Getafe.

In February 2023, serious accusations against him—including assault and attempted rape—were withdrawn.

The mayor of Marseille chastised the French team after it was revealed that they intended to sign Greenwood.

2019 saw him make his competitive senior debut for United against Paris St. Germain in the Champions League as a substitute.

In 129 games, he scored 35 goals, and in 2020, he earned his lone England cap.

United announced in August 2023 that Greenwood will depart the team amicably following a six-month internal probe regarding his behavior.

The next month, he signed with La Liga team Getafe, where he revitalized his career with 10 goals and 6 assists in 36 games.

In addition to wishing Greenwood well on their website, United’s agreement with Marseille includes a sizable sell-on provision.

On August 3, Marseille will play Sunderland in a preseason friendly at Bradford City’s Valley Parade. Due to renovations, the Stadium of Light will not be available.

Bradford is where Greenwood was born, and this may be his first game back in England since his arrest in January 2022 over allegedly violent content that appeared online.
