After a terrible Copa America campaign, Mexico has appointed Barcelona veteran Rafael Marquez as their assistant manager, under new boss Javier Aguirre.
After Jamie Lozano’s unfortunate departure from the 2024 Copa America group stage, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) cut ties with him. Aguirre has been named the new manager, while Marquez, a former captain of Mexico, will work under him.

Aguirre, who guided Mexico to the round of 16 in the World Cups of 2002 and 2010, is back for a third time. He brings a plethora of experience and a solid resume with him. As co-host, the 65-year-old will lead the group through the 2026 World Cup before turning things over to Marquez.
Director of national teams Duilio Davino said, “Javier has a strong track record, with experience and undisputed leadership in team management, while Rafa has great skill in talent development,” as part of the FMF’s confidence in their recent appointments. Without a question, [Aguirre] is the Mexican coach with the longest and most well-known international career. He also possesses extensive understanding of the workings of national teams.

“One of the most significant athletes in Mexican history, Rafael started his coaching career with a legendary squad and had a fantastic national and international career. In order for him to share his experience and eventually take the lead, we have offered him the position of assistant till 2026.”
