Preview: Netherlands vs France as both teams look to qualify for next round
The Netherlands still have little chance of winning a second European Championship in Germany, 36 years after their first and only victory, despite their lackluster performance at Euro 2020 last time out. Their campaign started off well with a 2-1 comeback victory over Poland, despite the fact that they continued to depend on Wout Weghorst as a substitute.
France also triumphed in their opening match of the competition, defeating an intense Austrian team by a slim 1-0 margin. Though they weren’t at their best in their first game, Didier Deschamps’ team, the overwhelming favorites in the competition, may make a significant impact if they defeat the Dutch in Leipzig.
These two have a lot of recent history, of course. In qualification, France defeated the Netherlands twice, which included a 4-0 thumping in Saint-Denis.
This Friday’s match against France could see Brian Brobbey return to the Netherlands squad as the Ajax forward nears full health after suffering a hamstring injury. But he’ll be just an impact sub, nothing more.
After breaking his nose against Austria, Kylian Mbappe, France’s captain and icon, departed the country worried about his fitness. It is unclear if he will be able to play against the Netherlands, but for the duration of the competition, he will need to wear a protective face mask.
Marcus Thuram, who played on the left flank against Austria, may be moved to the center forward position if Mbappe is unable to play. As an alternative, Olivier Giroud, the all-time leading goalscorer for France, or Randal Kolo Muani might start.
